It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of David Strong in January 2026, aged 95. David was not only a founder member of the Friends, he was also a prominent member of the Aldershot Military Historical Trust which set up the Museum and manged it in its early days.
David served with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps as a National Serviceman, and then in the Army Reserve and Territorial Army, reaching the rank of Colonel. After his time in the Army he worked in banking, became manager of the Aldershot branch of the National Westminster Bank in Wellington Street, and was a Fellow of the Chartered Banker Institute. He was committed to Aldershot’s history and heritage, worked with Brigadier Reed on the Aldershot Military Historical Trust, and served for many years as Secretary of the Trust. He wrote the definitive book on Gale and Polden printers and was responsible for the blue plaque on the building which now occupies their works site. David was a lifelong member of FAMM and for many years audited our annual accounts.
All who knew David remembered him as a true gentleman and family man, who not only had a lifelong enthusiasm for local history but who directly made a major contribution to preserving Aldershot’s heritage. He will be greatly missed and we extend our sincere sympathies to his wife and family.
