It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Peter Moulin in September 2018.
Peter Moulin grew up in north-west London. His mother was from Hampshire and Peter made frequent visits to her extended family and became familiar with the military connections of the area. In that sense he was always aware of Aldershot and its rich military history.
He became a history teacher and spent his whole teaching career in Surrey, living in Frimley. Surrey County Council gave him a long-service award in 1997. Peter developed a deep interest in military history, especially World War 1 and for many years led school tours of the battlefields of northern France, developing an impressive set of resources. He also had an interest in family history and researched the military careers of many of his ancestors, writing articles for family history publications.
After his retirement, before his illness and subsequent lack of mobility, Peter discovered that an officer from his local area who had been awarded the Victoria Cross did not have a memorial. He successfully persuaded the council to provide a stone for Garth Walford and was very pleased to be invited to the unveiling of the paving stone in Camberley in 2015. Peter also contributed in other ways to the centenary of the Great War, researching with a friend and producing a commemorative book for Rutlish School containing a tribute to each of the former pupils who had fought in WW1, and researching for a book about Wyndham Lewis, the official war artist and writer. Peter became a staunch supporter of the Friends of Aldershot Military Museum and greatly enjoyed participating in activities at the museum.
