Ribbon of Poppies

On 12 April 2026 a group of the Friends of the Aldershot Military Museum (FAMM) spent the morning sowing poppy seeds in support the Aldershot Garrison ‘Ribbon of Poppies’ project.

The Ribbon of Poppies is a garrison-wide project, the initiative of the Garrison Chaplaincy Team. It aims to get people to plant poppy seeds across the garrison in the spring so they flower for Armed Forces Day at the end of June 2026. (For full details see page 32 of the Winter 2025 issue of the Garrison Magazine, electronic version available at https://edition.pagesuite-professional.co.uk/html5/reader/production/default.aspx?pubname=&edid=1524b6a5-8a95-4306-824e-8e58dd3b6310 ).

The Museum was approached by one of the team to see if the museum would participate, and the Museum Manager asked FAMM for help. We were pleased to do so, and bought the poppy seeds and compost. The poppies have been planted along the edge of the grass by the fence at the corner of Queen’s Avenue and Evelyn Wood’s Road, where the area is relatively open from tree shade so the flowers will have every chance of healthy growth and will make a fine display. Seeds were also put into the planters along the Evelyn Wood’s Road side of the Boyce Building, to give a display along the road side, and in the planters between the two main brick buildings.

We look forward to seeing the flowers grow during spring and come into bloom. FAMM has been pleased to make this contribution to the Museum and to this Garrison-wide project.
